Depth Is the New Differentiator

When was the last time a client relationship actually shifted something in you, and became something more than just business?
If you're drawing a blank, you're not alone. Most client engagement still runs on the same pre-pandemic playbook: a dinner, a round of golf, a happy hour. Pleasant? Yes. Forgettable? Also yes, and people are tired because while connection matters to them, this version of it doesn't do much and they'd frankly rather be elsewhere.
I got to see the alternative up close more than once in the last few months, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.
I had the privilege of keynoting World Wide Technology's "Grit with Grace" event in Orlando and Denver. Two distinct rooms of 60 leaders from some of the most respected technology and themed entertainment companies in the world, including Disney, Universal, Nvidia, Dell, HPE, and Salesforce.
Both events were led by EVPs who each made the same decision that their clients deserved more than a dinner and a deck.
Their Marketing teams planned the events and nailed them. Every detail was intentional, down to what people walked away with. Not just the tools and inspiration from my talk, but something tangible like a bottle of perfume etched with a word that matters to them, or a bottle of wine with a label they design themselves.
WWT had invited their clients into a space built around something much harder to manufacture: real conversation about what it actually takes to lead and perform sustainably, as humans.
We talked about energy, capacity, and presence as the thing the real business conversations depend on in an increasingly complex world. And because the rooms were small and the intention was genuine, people were honest and open about the pace they're keeping, what it's costing them, and what they actually want more of.
That kind of candor doesn't happen by accident. It happens because someone decided a client relationship was worth more than a transaction.
I don't take engagements like this lightly. There's a version of this work that happens on a big stage, in front of thousands, and I love that too. But being asked into an intimate environment twice, by the same company for two different sets of clients is a different kind of honor. It means someone trusted me not just to entertain their clients, but to say something true to them. Being selected to inspire and engage leaders at these companies is not something I take for granted, and it's the work I find most meaningful.
WWT didn't do this because it was trendy but because they understand something that's easy to say and much harder to act on. The relationships that actually last, the ones that turn into loyalty and referral and genuine partnership, are the ones with depth where someone invested in the other person, not just the account.
I see this in my own work too. The clients who rebook and refer aren't the ones who got the best swag or the flashiest happy hour. They're the ones who got something they could actually use that made them a better leader, a more present partner, a steadier parent. Something that mattered on a random Tuesday, not just at the event.
That's not a coincidence. That's the whole strategy.
A question worth sitting with if you're responsible for client relationships or for any relationship you want to deepen:
What type of impact and engagement do you actually want to offer the people you want to keep close?
There's no better time to start to be more creative. The companies doing this differently aren't necessarily spending more but they're spending differently, on depth instead of volume, on presence instead of polish.
